Since moving here 11 years ago, I've heard people complain that the same issues plague this town decade after decade. No matter how people try to avoid mistakes, they say, the leaders invariably repeat the same mistakes. My radio show was in some ways meant to help change that through sharing information.
But just now in the course of decluttering my house, I came across a 2003 Open Letter from Asbury Radio (then known as Restore Radio) published in The Coaster. The year was 2003. The Waterfront Redevelopment Agreement was passed the previous fall and the State Dept of Environmental Protection was reviewing the City's (CAFRA) application to execute the redevelopment plan. The department's job was to determine how the City's plan to develop the oceanfront would ecologically impact the fragile coastal area and its inhabitants.
From my research and talks with City residents and others, many of whom voiced their concerns weekly over Asbury Radio, I formed a list of concerns about the proposed plan. It's eery to see how many points in my letter are the very flaws the City has listed in the Spring of 2011 as reasons why it wants to dissolve and replace the very same plan. I hope posting it will stimulate more to participate in the process.
This time the City has formed a Waterfront Redevelopment committee to accept input from different groups. But the City also held numerous public meetings, carefully recording resident input, before passing the flawed plan in place now.
Will the City's leaders really listen to and act on the Committee's concerns? People have a right to be skeptical and perhaps get some guarantees that resident concerns will be resolved, leaders will resign or in other ways offer the public compensation for their mistakes and that the City will end its futile cycle.

Anonymous Senders Please Read
I call this site the Radio Voice of Asbury Park because it was created to give voice to all. However, anonymous statements raise issues.
Some of the messages I receive from anonymous senders contain information that I can pursue for verification, time permitting. The more information and verification -- proof -- supplied by the sender the more likely I'll have time to follow up.
Other anon messages are merely hate-filled rants. The latter have caused me to initiate a rule barring all anonymous comments with the rationale that people with legitimate points to make should stand ready to defend them. If writers fear reprisals, they should indicate so in the comment when sending it.

FCC Finally Responds to Request from Asbury Radio
FCC Denies Asbury Radio's Request for an Explanation -
And, we're apparently not alone
As former NBC Sports Producer, Mike Hemeon, pointed out today, the commission seems to have denied a bunch of requests for inspections (see below).
In our case, we've been trying since the FCC turned off WYGG's transmitter, in November, 2006, to see the case files. We got about three inches of documents, with tons of redactions (black marker obliterating passages, in places just pronouns), but when we asked why 16 files had been withheld, a long delay set in. We were first given a string of numbers and letters, some kind of government code, which was meaningless to us.
So we appealed. It is October 2009, and we are only now getting the commission's decision on that appeal. Basically, they say they weren't in error when they withheld the files. No, you're not crazy, we never said they were in error. We asked them to translate into English their reason for denying our request.
The station went back up in February of 2007, but whenever the station or Asbury Radio, a show on the station for 6.5 years, talked about going back on, the FCC representative again would leave his Varick St., NY, office and go back to the studio, which is now at Asbury Avenue, on Library Square.
In the meanwhile the station has obtained a license to go from 100 to 1500 watts and can be heard from Long Branch to Pt. Pleasant. The station management would like Asbury Radio - The Radio Voice of Asbury Park, a weekly public affairs talk and entertainment show, back on their airwaves.

Re-Elected Incumbents' First Meeting Tonight
The Asbury Park City Council will convene tonight with the same five members that ran for re-election and won against the slate Time4Change and two individual candidates: Amy Quinn and Harold Suggs, on May 12th.
The highest vote-getter, Ed Johnson, is expected to take over the post of mayor from Kevin Sanders, who has held that seat since 2001. John Loffredo is also expected to unseat Jimmy Bruno as Deputy Mayor, since he garnered more votes than Bruno. But those changes probably will not take effect until July 1, when the new administration is sworn in.
Time4Change candidate, Rosetta Johnson, has lodged a complaint about the functioning of the ballott machines used in the municipal election May 12th. A Monmouth County Superior Court judge has ordered a full mechanical and electronic inspection of all the machines used. The report is expected this week. Maureen Nevin, founder of Asbury Radio, who also ran on the Time4Change ticket, will no longer record and post the content of council meetings on this site, but will instead blog here on major issues.
